Telling The Stories of People Like Us – Melanie McGrath – JoinedUp#90

It’s episode 90 with friend of the show, Melanie McGrath who writes both fiction and non-fiction and today we focus on the latter with Mel giving a fascinating insight into her process and why she’s so passionate about telling what she calls ‘the stories about people like us’.

Melanie is a self-proclaimed Essex girl, cofounder of Killer Women, and an award-winning writer of fiction and nonfiction. As MJ McGrath she writes the acclaimed Edie Kiglatuk series of Arctic mysteries, White Heat, The Boy in the Snow and The Boneseeker, twice longlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger and picked as Times and Financial Times thrillers of the year. As Melanie McGrath she’s written several critically acclaimed non-fiction books, with her most recent being Pie and Mash Down The Roman Road. It’s always lovely to talk to Melanie, but this was the first time we got to chat face to face in Mel’s home in London, back in August. It was fascinating to hear how Mel approaches her non fiction projects in a very similar way to her fiction and I think there’s something in this interview for writers of all genres.
