Episode 91 is a special NaNoWriMo themed show – that’s National Novel Writing Month, a global free to enter competition that runs every November where you challenge yourself to write at least 50,000 words of a novel. I’ve completed the challenge in years gone by, but this year I’m deep in the final edits of my novel, Safe Hands so I’m content to cheer you all on from the sidelines and help as many of you as I can. With that in mind, I invited friend of the show, collaborator and friend of mine, Maria Smith on to the show to talk about her experience with NaNoWriMo and to get her practical advice on smashing your Nano goals and staying motivated to write at any time of the year.
Maria writes dark fiction, urban fantasy and paranormal. Her short fiction has been published in a number of anthologies and her work has been adapted for stage and an award-winning short film. She is passionate about inspiring other writers through her personal blog, Script Aloud Workshops and a soon to be announced non-fiction project she is currently collaborating on with me. Follow her on Twitter @MariaAsmith and check out her First Draft Cafe Blog.
I also mention an excellent series of YouTube videos from Creative Life Coach, Gabriela Blandy called Write No Matter What which are part of a wider campaign Gabriela has launched to help writers and creatives overcome fear and procrastination. She’s running a free webinar in December and you should subscribe to her YouTube channel to find out more – I’ll put a link to it in the shownotes or you can search the hashtag WriteNoMatterWhat on YouTube. You can also follow Gabriela on Twitter @gabrielablandy.
It was also lovely to hear from Sharon Boothroyd about a charity anthology that features one of my short stories, along with dozens of others from some great writers. It’s been selling really well and all proceeds go to a great RSPCA charity. If you want to help out and read some quality short fiction, take a look at the Paws For Thought anthology, now available as an ebook on Amazon at the bargain price of £2.99.
